Hong Kong born and raised in Canada, Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit has been steadily making his mark in underground electronic music circles since his first release in 2003. Stuart grew up listening to Toronto’s college radio stations and attended after hours parties playing underground house music. He later worked at Cosmos Records store which dealt vintage Jazz, Soul, Funk, Latin, Brazilian, Disco, House & Hip Hop to crate diggers both local and from abroad. Reflecting his diverse interest in music, Stuart’s productions can swing from lush and soulful to crunchy jacking house & techno.

He has released and remixed music on respected labels such as Dolly, Philpot, Mathematics, Mule Electronic, Versatile, Ostgut Ton, Créme Organization & New Kanada. 2012 promises to be an exciting year for Basic Soul Unit as it will see the release of his first long player on Chicago’s Still Music as well as an ep on Boddika’s Nonplus+ label. As with his productions, Stuart’s strength as a DJ is his versatility. Depending on the night and the crowd, he can throw down melodic techno, heavy jacking sounds, deep house, disco, and often a combination of these. Stuart’s journey as a DJ has taken him to Berlin (Panorama Bar), Tokyo (Yellow, Loop, Womb), Barcelona, Madrid, Oslo, Glasgow, St Petersburg, New York & more.

The Basic Soul Unit live set debuted in Toronto in February 2012 and in Europe with Glasgow & Stockholm in March. Using a combination of hardware and digital technology, the live set expresses the rawness and honesty of Stuart’s productions. 2012 sees Stuart hitting his stride whether as a DJ or a live performer with shows confirmed in renowned festivals & clubs such as Mutek, Zouk, Decibel & more!

Firstly, we have called upon a fine operative, a young man who assisted in bringing Melbourne to life at night years ago via the true electro-nic sounds of the infamous MECCANOID parties, and who is continuing to do so by running a residency at the legendary Revolver’s “Late Show”,  a true covert operative who has played all over Europe, North America & beyond sourcing only the most viable of sound secrets via his renowned record label which has seen support from the upper echelons of the radio wave community…. we have called upon;

It has come to our attention that a large number of outside forces, as well as a few of man’s best friends, broke through the front lines recently and as a result some of our comrades were captured in the process.

HAHA HQ asserts that all soldiers entering the field of battle must better equip themselves with the appropriate knowledge & tools to successfully complete each mission they embark on.

Each soldier MUST learn precisely how to duck & when to weave stealthily into the darkness, how to properly camouflage themselves within each and every type of terrain they encounter.

As elite soldiers we have & have always had the most potent propensity for survival in all conditions….

Recent events have shown us that we all MUST improve our tactical response methods!

In order to accomplish this task we will train hard, we will study the enemy evasion tactics shown before us repeatedly & to our best ability, as we continue to strive towards becoming more effective soldiers on the battle-less field.

HAHA HQ has prepared a MANDATORY FIELD MISSION aimed at providing each soldier with comprehensive tactical field response technics.

The Tactical Response Training Mission will begin at TWENTY TWO HUNDRED HOURS on the evening of SATURDAY MARCH 10th.

Your Tactical Response Mission Commanders will be none other than the locally legendary:

** NOTE: this mission requires some field course prep work in the form of practicing how to carefully stow away your personal BYO rations prior to departing on a mission. It requires each soldier to consider the various ways one might blend in with their surroundings so as to evade capture by the enemy & to practice effective ways of monitoring enemy patrols in the field so as to assist you & your fellow comrades to stay on the winning side of this war of the night……….

One of present days true movers and shakers in the deep, dark nightlife that is Berlin, Hunee has amassed an incredible discography in a relatively short space of time. Including those are the sounds he’s released on Prins Thomas’s “Internajonal” label, the forward thinking, Washington D.C based “Future Times” label and of course one cannot fail to mention his remix release (soon to be releases plural any day now) on Rush Hour for the legendary Chicago House group, VIRGO FOUR.

However, Hunee’s not one to simply sit back and lap up the limelight of his recent successes and has instead forged ahead with yet another new track due out shortly on Dekmantel as part of the Dekmantel Anniversary Series as well as an album for Rush Hour also in the pipeline.

With a whole heap of releases on a variety of other labels each catering to quite varied soundscapes, it’s easily noted that there is significant musical knowledge put into every single release he makes or record he wax on the platter at any given time.

The musicology graduate knows exactly where to take the dancefloor, many moves before you actually arrive there in jubilation. Head honcho of the “Hunchin All Night” residency at Soju Bar in Berlin, he takes punters on a tour to ecstasy every chance he gets….and soon, it’s your turn!

Two of our long standing comrades have joined the elite military unit overseas and have recently been granted leave for the holidays.

On this day we invite you all to celebrate their unique abilities to brave the psychologically strenuous adversities of the elite units “Espirit de Corps”, we celebrate their triumphant return home and on this day we will help them to carry the flag of their “Legion Etrangere” high up on it’s mast as we stomp our feet in the welcome parade!
